Within the project E-Archiving of the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries a platform for the online delivery of digitised Swiss scholarly journals has been successfully set up. Attractive digitisation projects were carried out with various partners and have been transferred into routine operation. By mid-2008, about one million pages will be freely available. In the framework of the national cooperation project, inclusion of journals was restricted to those titles with a national coverage within their discipline and – whenever possible – with international recognition.
This necessary limitation is in contrast to the way scholarship and culture in Switzerland is working. Both are deeply influenced by regional and cantonal influences. This granularity is also reflected in scholarly publishing, where numerous regional publications make an impact beyond their immediate region of origin. Swiss multilinguism additionally supports this granularity and to a certain degree hinders reception beyond the region of the original language.
From the beginning it was intended to keep the platform for digital journals open for additions of further titles according to the needs of scholarly disciplines. It is therefore the aim to augment the offer by the addition of other periodicals and to further enhance its functions. An important issue is the integration into the evolving tools for metasearches in E-lib.ch over both electronic and printed resources.
