The project "Retrieval competencies for scientific search applications" helps to support customers of the Swiss electronic library (E-lib.ch) to build up and establish skills in the usage of scientific search engines like Scirus, CiteSeer, Scopus or Google-Scholar.

The aim is to enable users to handle scientific search engines appropriately despite the growing offer of systems and the steady changes and new developments in this area. Not only need the users to be able to assess the pros and cons of such systems but the objective is also to give background information on the topic of information retrieval in the scientific area (e.g. the coverage of search engine indices, information on new services, background information on the content providers, quality of sources, criteria for evaluation and usage, special functionalities, etc.).

The SPRINT portal (Swiss portal for internet research), which is operated by the Swiss Institute for Information Research (SSI), provides the contentual basis for the project.
