A virtual manuscript library for Switzerland
"E-codices" is a project run by the Mediaeval Institute of the University of Fribourg which developed out of an initiative by Christoph Flüeler, Professor in Historical Complementary Science and Mediaeval Latin at the University of Fribourg and member of the Mediaeval Institute. Since the project began at the start of 2005, the service has been continuously developed, in partnership with the Stiftsbibliothek (Abbey Library) in St. Gallen. Over the last four years, a number of sub-projects have already been completed and a total of over 3.4 million Swiss francs acquired in third-party funding. So far, 864 manuscripts (as of 5 January 2012) have been reproduced in their entirety and made available free of charge on the "www.e-codices.ch" website, accompanied by academic notes on the manuscripts.
With the support of "e-lib", "e-codices" has been able to establish itself as the single point of access for manuscript research in Switzerland and an internationally recognised centre of expertise. "E-lib.ch" is also making it possible to access a further 100 manuscripts from all kinds of Swiss libraries. All Switzerland's leading manuscript libraries have joined this project and the service is continuously being expanded. Smaller collections which do not have adequate resources of their own are also able to benefit from this opportunity.
Currently 35 manuscript libraries participate.
