Internet platform for digitised rare books from Swiss libraries

Project management : Dr. Franziska Geisser, ETH-Bibliothek

Duration : 01.2008-12.2011

The main purpose of this project is the digitization of rare books pertaining to Switzerland on an unified platform. To this end, several document digitalisation facilities - basing on existing know-how and infrastructure - able to process large quantities of books and guide other institutions therein will be established. A competence centre coordinates the decentralized digitization, elaborates standards, guidelines and workflows, trains the stuff and advises other institutions.

In parallel, an electronic platform that enables joint publishing of digitised books will be developed. The platform will offer functions according to the state-of-the-art: searching in full-text and metadata browsing the collection and functional groups, using a viewer consisting in different options (page selection, zooming, PDF downloading). The metadata recording follows the international standards and accordingly integrates to higher level portals.

The infrastructure as well as the platform will be available to all Swiss Libraries. As a first topical focus the 16th century Swiss printed material will be digitised and processed. Further concentrations are to be evaluated during the project. The projected goal is to digitise and have available online 15,000 volumes at the end of the project in 2011.

With funding from the project E-lib.ch only the digitisation will be accomplished. The scholarly work with the content will have to be funded separately.
