Within the pilot project "Journal server" of the module E-Archiving of the Consortium of Swiss academic libraries the scenario of taking over scholarly content in electronic form for local storage inside an "E-Depot" has been realized. Experience from this pilot project teaches that it is particularly reasonable for consortially licensed content to undertake storage centrally for all authorized institutions. Synergies of consortial cooperation can thus be extended towards storage and long term preservation.
The project E-Archiving showed the general feasibility as well as the possibilities and limitations of this approach have been demonstrated. Within the framework of E-lib.ch the following tasks are in the centre of interest:
- Development of a service offer "E-Depot" based on the existing technical infrastructure for the needs of single libraries and of the Consortium
- Identification of appropriate workflows for the transfer of data and of data curation (e.g. in the case of subsequent changes of data by the publisher)
- Integration into existing search services and optimization of use
- Acceptance of further content according to libraries’ needs
- Preparation of long term preservation
- Current watch of the service’s environment and adaption of its future development
