e-codices is a project of the Medieval Institute of the University of Fribourg and traces its origins to an initiative by Christoph Flüeler, Professor for Manuscript Studies and Medieval Latin at the University of Fribourg. The project began in early 2005 in collaboration with the Abbey Library of St. Gall and has continued to grow since then. Over the past four years, several sub-projects have already been completed, and a total of over two million Swiss Francs in external grant funding has been received. 380 manuscripts (as of March 26, 2009) have been digitally reproduced in their entirety and made available, together with corresponding scholarly manuscript descriptions, free of charge on the project web site, www.e-codices.ch.

Thanks to the support of E-lib, e-codices has been able to establish itself as the "single point of access" for manuscript research in Switzerland and as an internationally recognized center of expertise in the field. E-lib.ch has also underwritten the digitization and web accessibility of 100 additional manuscripts from various Swiss libraries. 22 of the most important manuscript libraries in Switzerland have already participated in this project, and the scope of participation continues to expand. Even smaller collections with scant financial resources can benefit from the opportunity to take part.
