The objective of the project DOI-CH is to establish a central infrastructure for all Swiss universities and university libraries for the allocation, the registration and the administration of digital object identifiers (DOIs) for digital primary and secondary data. Of the numerous persistent identifier concepts available, the DOI-system satisfies most for its use in the scientific area. This measure allows identification and addressing of documents also in the long term and consequently reduces loss of knowledge.
The concept plans the establishment of the organisational infrastructure at the ETH-Bibliothek. For the installation and operation of the technical infrastructure the library cooperates with the IT-department at ETH Zurich. For reason ETH Zurich will introduce DOIs soon, synergies can be used meaningful for the establishment of the project in Switzerland.
The registration of DOI's is implemented in cooperation with DataCite - International Data Citation Initiative, which is a joint registration agency for primary and secondary data officially recognised by the DOI Foundation.
